Sing, Lions, Sing Hear that roar? It’s melodic. It’s tuneful. It’s a song. Why Lions love to sing. By Jay Copp
No club member is quite sure when the singing at their meetings began. After all, the Abilene Founder Lions Club in Texas started in 1917. But for as far back as even the oldest member can recall, meetings have begun with a few brief words by the president, followed by a short prayer from the chaplain. Then, with the decisiveness of a longtime tradition, the Lions pop out of their chairs and sing exuberantly.
Maybe worshipers don’t sing as robustly at church as they once did. Perhaps fans at ballparks and stadiums mostly listen as the national anthem is played. Most likely the Happy Birthday ritual at the workplace lacks enthusiasm. Public singing seems to be on the wane.
But Lions still sing. Loudly, proudly and frequently.
